Policosanol is a very safe substance derived from the outer wax of the sugarcane plant. It contains fatty alcohols that have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels, particularly those due to genetic factors (familial hypercholesteremia).
Policosanol exerts antioxidant effects and controls the liver's production and breakdown of cholesterol. Research shows that it may lower serum cholesterol levels and reduce platelet aggregation, as well as reduce the amount of cholesterol in the liver, heart and fatty tissue. It may also prevent and reverse atherosclerotic lesions and thrombosis. As an antioxidant, it works to prevent LDL oxidation.
