Lutein is an important carotenoid which protects the eyes, lungs and arteries from free radical damage. It has also been found to play an important role in protecting the eyes from the deterioration that comes with aging, sun damage and eye strain.
Lutein is one of two carotenoids (the other is zeaxanthin) that are found in the eyes, particularly in the macula and the lens, where they help to absorb damaging blue light, quench singlet oxygen and inhibit lipid peroxidation. As a result, supplementing with lutein may help to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and the formation of cataracts.
